Help to Engage With Your Audience on Twitter

Nimble Quotes Bill Bowerman

So you’ve decided to start tweeting thought-provoking quotes from your Twitter account.  Great decision. But how do you get your followers to stop and really think about the quotes you’ve tweeted? How do you start conversations on Twitter?  That’s where engagement hooks come in.

“Engagement Hooks” – What Are They?

At Nimble Quotes, we’ve created a little something called an “engagement hook”.  It’s a type of conversation starter for your quote – an intriguing statement or a thought-provoking question to lead into the quote.  We include these to help our users connect and get involved in the Twitter conversation.

Using Engagement Hooks to Start Conversations on Twitter

The engagement hook is a way to get people to really think about the quote that you’re tweeting.  An enthusiastic exclamation can get people excited about what the quote has to say.  It can inspire them to action. A reflective question can make them consider what meaning the quote holds for them; how they may apply this quote in their own life.  Whatever form it comes in, the engagement hook is meant to help you start conversations on Twitter.

Engagement hooks are what make our quotes different from other quotes on Twitter.  When you sign up with Nimble Quotes, you don’t just get a slew of quotable sayings – you get meaningful quotes with thoughtful, reflective engagement hooks attached to them.

Where Do We Get Engagement Hooks?

Our writers and editors think about how each individual quote can be used to spark a conversation with your Twitter followers, interpreting what that quote means. They then write a meaningful engagement hook, getting right to the heart of the quote.

We put all of this thought into the engagement hooks because we want to help our users participate in the conversation, break the ice with their followers. The curated, high-quality quotes are already a helpful addition to your Twitter account; the engagement hook gives each quote a boost to start an interaction.

Is Tweeting for Fun an Effective Social Media Strategy?

Have you ever heard the saying “all work and no play make Jack a dull boy?” That’s as true for Twitter as it is for kids. Many business accounts I see (and even those of entrepreneurs I talk to) take their social media strategies way too seriously.

Yes, tweeting about promos, sales and marketing content has its place. But if that’s all you’re doing, then you’re not using Twitter to its fullest advantage. If you want to connect with the Twitterverse, you have to introduce some fun into your stream.

Mixing it up keeps things fresh

Have you ever had that one friend who only talked about work? His work? It might be interesting at first, but you’d get pretty sick of that pretty fast. Your followers might feel the same way if the only thing you do when using Twitter for business is tweet self-promotional things.

Mixing it up with other kinds of content—whether it’s your own or from other people—is a great way to keep things fresh. You don’t have to share cat videos if it doesn’t match your social media strategy or brand image. Try sharing informational articles, interesting statistics, or poignant thoughts.

Prioritize connection, not promotion30-day trialInspirational quotes in your

What’s the most important social media metric you should be tracking? Nope, it’s not followers or likes. It’s engagement.

If you want to get traction with your social media strategy, you have to both engage people in conversations, and put out content that encourages conversation, too. Show people that you’re not just throwing out link after link on your Twitter business account. Talk to people and get to know each other. That way, you’ll forge stronger connections with the online community and people will see you’re not a mindless robot.

Brand building is more than just “work” tweets

The word “brand” now has such a stuffy and serious connotation. But really, “brand” is just a fancy word to describe your company’s personality. And remember what I said before? A person who just talks about work has a dull personality. Commenting about your industry or sharing a quote from an industry expert furthers your brand just as much as tweeting about a sale.

So don’t be dull. Dare to be interesting. Dare to express yourself. Dare to be—god forbid—funny. Not only will you connect with people online better, but you may even start enjoying yourself on social media.

Break the Ice! Use Quotes to Connect with your Twitter Audience

Nimble Quotes George Smith Patton

Has a quote or series of quotes ever resonated with you?  Has one ever stirred your emotions, made you stop and think for a minute?  If so, you’re not alone.  Meaningful, uplifting quotes have inspired countless people and have even, at times, prompted them to action.

Inspire and Impact

A great advantage of using quotes in your Twitter feed is their inspirational nature.  Quotes can affect us, motivate us, push us to action.  When you tweet a positive, powerful quote, you break the ice with your audience.  You start a conversation that doesn’t hinge on promoting your business.  This conversation could be the first step toward building a relationship with your audience.

Quotes Spark a Connection

Want to connect emotionally with your followers and elicit a response from them?  Admittedly, this is a struggle at times.  It’s hard to know the right thing to say to influence others.  That’s when using quotes to supplement your Twitter account comes in handy.  There are myriads of quotes available on virtually any topic, emotion and industry imaginable.  Once you tweet the quote from your Twitter account, you begin to connect directly with other people’s emotions.  This connection motivates them to action, and before you know it your tweet has been re-tweeted and discussed.  And how rewarding it feels to truly engage with people this way!

Ready to Begin?

So what’s holding you back?  If you love a good inspirational quote and want to break the ice and begin truly connecting with your Twitter followers, don’t hesitate!  Start posting quotes that resonate with you and your audience.  Remember to include the person who said or wrote the quote.  It’s important to attribute the quote to the rightful author.  You’ll want to experiment with different quotes and the times and days you post them.  Depending on your audience, it can matter which time of day your content appears on your Twitter feed.  You don’t want to overwhelm your readers with quotes – the quotes are not meant to be your only content.  They are meant to supplement your content.  Think of quotes as part of your Twitter content like a bass guitar in a rock song – not the main attraction, but supportive to the rest of the song.  Good luck and let us know the quotes that resonate best with your audience!

If having quotes in your Twitter feed seems like the type of content that would work well for your brand, give Nimble Quotes a try.  Sign up for our 30-day free trial and watch the positive results come pouring in.  You’ll get 1-8 quotes per day from a choice of 10+ categories and the ability to add your own hashtags.  Best yet, no software to learn and you never have to reschedule a thing.  Learn more at www.nimblequotes.com!  Not ready?  Sign up for the Nimble Quotes newsletter instead.

What is Hashtag Power?

Nimble Quotes: What is Hashtag Power

Using hashtags on Twitter will help you contribute to the conversation on that topic. It will help the people interested and searching for information on that subject, industry or geographical area, be able to find you.

What are hashtags?

A hashtag is a word with a number sign or hash sign in front of it. A hashtag for Toronto, for example, is #Toronto. The hashtag for coffee is #coffee. Learn more about hashtags and how to use them by reading this blog post.

How to use hashtags with quotes

Our users have come up with some really inventive and interesting ways to use hashtags with their Nimble Quotes. This has been a powerful way to get them into the conversation. We named this feature “hashtag power”.

Default hashtags

The term “default hashtag” is a term we use with Nimble Quotes. Each one of our quote categories has been researched and compiled carefully. They are vetted for quality and content. These quotes are secular without a partisan, political or religious point of view. Free of questionable, controversial or offensive material.

Each category represents a topic. This could be an industry like Real Estate, a lifestyle choice like fitness or an interest like books/reading. As you learned earlier, including a hash tag appropriate to the topic will help people who are searching to find it.

To help Nimble Quotes users get into the conversation, we’ve compiled a few ‘default’ hashtags for each quote category. Again, besides keeping your Twitter account active with positive, engaging quotes, we want to help you get into the conversation applicable to your interest or business. Including appropriate hashtags after each quote is one way we help.

Examples of default hashtags:
Here are Nimble Quotes categories and an example of their default hashtags:

Real Estate quotes category:
#realestate, #home, #property

Fitness quotes category:
#fitness, #health, #healthyliving

Books/reading quotes category:
#books, #book, #reading

Using your own hashtags

With Nimble Quotes, you have the option of choosing to have the category (or categories, you are able to choose as many categories of quotes you want) default hashtags, using your own hashtags or both.

Here is an example:

In the Nimble Quotes system, I’ve chosen the Business quotes category. I already know each category comes with a set of default hashtags. However, my business focuses on small businesses in Toronto. I want hashtags that help get me into those conversations.  I chose to have both the default hashtags and my own custom hashtags. I chose the hashtags #Toronto for my city and #SMB for small/medium business. I type my custom hashtags into  the field under “custom hashtag”. Once I save this setting, my business quotes will have one hashtag each time they appear in my stream of either the default category hashtag, or my custom hashtag choices.
